Night Swimming Requests

7/14/2025

We recently have had a few requests about night swimming at the HLA Pool and have looked into the feasibility of this.  Below are the details of what we've learned:
  • Per our insurance carrier - to be properly covered we would need to have "Appropriate Lighting for Night Swimming".  This means that the entire pool, pool deck, and all entrances and exits (including the emergency exit) would need to be "lit like a beacon".  Several members have suggested inexpensive solar lights but per our agent, unfortunately this would not meet the requirements of our insurance company or the NH DES which oversees public** pools like ours.
  • According to our pool vendor, installing appropriate lighting in the pool would require cutting into the concrete around the pool to install multiple conduits and run electricity to at least 4 lights.  Estimated costs related to this project include at least 4 in-water submersible light fixtures suitable for a public pool ($500-$1,500 each), running electrical conduit and wires to all lights under concrete (roughly $3,000), and permitting ($350).  In addition we would need to install lighting on the pool deck and at each entrance and exit to the pool area.  In total, we are looking at a range of $6-$10K for this type of project.  This is well beyond the amount of funds that the association has allocated for pool improvements at this time.

The HLA Board and Recreation Director will continue to maximize pool availability by flexing the closing time between 7pm and 8pm depending on amount of daylight available at that time of year.

If you have any questions about this or the pool in general, please reach out to Mikki, our Recreation Director via [email protected].

**While our pool isn't open to the "public", it's defined as public as it is owned by an entity (Hidden Lake Association) and not an individual.
